Hey Lolly is one of the catchiest songs we sing in preschool music class. I often find myself humming the tune and my kids and I sing it a lot around the house.
Hey Lolly not only has a catchy tune and rhythm, but the lyrics are extremely simple and adaptable.
I’ve always loved this Woody Guthrie recording of Hey Lolly:
This Woody Guthrie version goes on with quite a few verses, but I always just stick with the opening lyrics:
Hey Lolly, Lolly, Lolly,
Hey Lolly, Lolly, lo
Hey Lolly, Lolly, Lolly,
Hey Lolly, Lolly, lo
It’s easy to sub kids’ names in the place of “Lolly” which makes this a good hello or welcoming song. You can also use it to sing about family members by replacing “Lolly” with “mommy”, “daddy”, “baby” or other family names.
I like to use this song in my Llama Llama Red Pajama lesson plan to introduce the Llama Llama story.
