Teaching young children to count doesn’t need to be a chore; counting songs and rhymes can turn the activity into a fun experience. These songs and rhymes are not only fun and catchy but also repetitive, making it easier for children to learn and remember numbers.
Five Jellyfish is a perfect example of a simple rhyme that teaches counting on fingers. It can be found in my Ocean Theme Preschool Music Lesson Plan.
This activity is very easy; you don’t need sheet music and can simply chant the words.
Demonstrate the gestures and encourage the students to try them.
Chant:
Five Jellyfish (wiggle fingers)
Five jellyfish bobbing up and down (move your hand up and down)
Five jellyfish float without a sound. (place your hand on your ear, like you’re listening)
A big wave comes (have your hand imitate a wave) And one swims down. (hold up one finger and have it drop down)
Repeat 4, 3, 2, 1.
I hope you find this activity helpful!
