Grey Squirrel is one of my favorite songs to sing with my preschool music classes. I use it in my animal-themed lesson plan, but it’s just a great song to have on hand to use in a pinch.
Here are the lyrics:
Grey squirrel, grey squirrel, shake your bushy tail.
Grey squirrel, grey squirrel, shake your bushy tail.
Wrinkle up your little nose, hold a nut between your toes.
Grey squirrel, grey squirrel, shake your bushy tail.
You can see that this song easily lends itself to movements – kids can shake their tails, scrunch their nose and pretend to hold a nut. They can even scamper around the room as you sing.
I like to have my class hold scarves to shake along with this song. They can just hold and shake the scarves as they sing, but it’s even more fun to tie them around their waist or on a belt loop and turn the scarves into colorful tails. Often times, we’ll pretend that each student is a squirrel the same color as their scarf and we’ll add more verses to match their colors.
