Hello, Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers! If you’re looking for some great books about Ireland or storybooks that take place in Ireland for young children, I have a few recommendations. You can use these books for St. Patrick’s Day or in a unit exploring countries and cultures. These books use simple language, concepts, and storytelling that fit perfectly into my preschool music lessons. You could also use them in a storytime circle group.

This list, along with many other resources, can be found in my Ireland Lesson Plan. I also have a St. Patrick’s Day lesson plan with different musical activities and book recommendations.

123 Ireland! by Aoife Dooley – This is a very simple picture book with few words. Learn to count with iconic symbols of Ireland: shamrocks, harps, hurleys, Irish dancers.

The Itsy Bitsy Leprechaun by Jeffrey Burton. This picture book is a cute twist on the classic nursery rhyme “The Itsy Bitsy Spider!”

Good Night Ireland by Adam Gamble. It seems like there’s a Goodnight book for every locale. This one has beautiful illustrations of some of Ireland’s famous landmarks and attractions.

S Is for Shamrock: An Ireland Alphabet by Eve Bunting. Part of a larger series of exploring the world A-Z books, this one gives a beautifully illustrated tour of Ireland and its cultural influence.

This Is Ireland by Miroslav Sasek  – Although this book is technically rated for 7 and above, many of the pages have only a few words with beautiful illustrations. You can skip over some of the denser, fact-filled pages.

Enjoy!
