6 Garden-Themed Stories For Preschoolers

March 3, 2021 by Megan

I recently shared my garden-themed preschool music lesson plan and today I wanted to share 6 stories that could go along with that lesson plan.

There are so many wonderful children’s stories that feature flowers, vegetables, plants, dirt, bugs and all of the other amazing things you can find in a garden. I narrowed this list down to six stories that are just the right length and level to keep a preschoolers attention. They all have beautiful illustrations, simple but engaging texts and relatable themes.

Plant The Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson

Plant The Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson is an adorable book that follows the life cycle of a seed. The pages are simple but inviting. There are many interactive elements throughout the story, such as a ladybug to find on each page and words that encourage movement such as clapping, tapping and jiggling. You can get it here.

The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss

The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss is a classic story about a little boy who was really determined to grow a carrot. After carefully tending to his seed and ignoring people who doubted him, he was successful. You can get it here.

Lola Plants A Garden by Anna McQuinn

Lola Plants A Garden by Anna McQuinn is a cute story about lovable Lola who is inspired to plant a garden. The story walks through her entire process from the spark of her idea to the completion of her garden and it ends with a little celebration with friends. You can get it here.

If You Hold A Seed by Elly MacKay

If You Hold A Seed by Elly MacKay depicts the magical nature of seeds, plants and their growth. It is really beautiful and poetic in nature. Like of of the other stories here, it highlights the life cycle of plants, but it is told from a more enchanted and mysterious perspective. You can get it here.

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

The Tiny Seed is another wonderful Eric Carle story that follows that adventures of a tiny seed (Find my free lesson plans featuring Eric Carle stories here). That little seed beat the odds and survived many forces of nature, encounters with animals, a long winter and eventually grew into a beautiful flower. You can get it here.

Planting A Rainbow by Lois Ehlert

Planting A Rainbow by Lois Ehlert comings the the concepts of gardens with the colors of the rainbows. It highlights all of the beautiful flowers that can be planted and grown in each color of the rainbow. You can get it here.
